The Future Kings of Nowhere – Like a Staring Contest

Everybody LEAP!!!!

Once every four years, we add a day. The news machine has said that there may be sales going on, so get out and SAVE!!!!!

Have I mentioned that Ted Rall is a freakin’ genius? Well, he is. His latest column has me thinking… I might need to vote Nader, and I have reservations about his earlier career choice of attacking GM’s Corvair. Rall’s writing is almost always cause for me to say “damn” as he points out clearly how messed up things are, be it with our current regime, our international policies, our contrived smugness in the face of daunting reality that we probably should have a national flag that says “Welcome to the Suck” … but – he’s a clearly defined, very bright light – I can only hope he continues to cast illumination for my brain to see the sharp edges of the shoals below. Anyways, Go Nader – tell it like it needs to be told – “Aside from most voters, only Ralph Nader wants impeachment proceedings against the “criminal recidivist regime of George Bush and Dick Cheney.””

And a shout out to the Utica OD, the little paper that … could! I noticed a subtle web site redesign this past week or so; surprising in that the Utica OD was released from the Ganett empire in the last 6 months or so – way to go OD. Better yet, they’re running it with Creative Common’s ‘Some Rights Reserved’ thinking – Yay!!!! Hell, they even have a saassy “Inconvenient? Perhaps. Necessary to ensure we live in a truly free society? Most definitely.” editorial regarding this past January’s turmoil over at Herkimer County Community College. Kudos, OD.

And have I mentioned how cute Blue is?? Just walked to the kitchen and she had a double nose tuck going on, and threw in a tail wag – AMAZING!!!!

Ok.
Go leap something. Have fun – it’ll be 4 more years – we’ll be heading into re-election campaign BS, it’ll be the second decade of the two-thousands – hell, the southeast might even have a decent water conservation plan!

Johnny Cash – Folsom Prison Blues

sunny day … yay yay yay!

whoa – channeling the partridge family or some such!

It IS a beautiful morning. I’m up early (I was about to say way early, but…)
and I notice … is Blue’s habit of grabbing a single/trio piece(s) of kibble and hopping up on the couch to spit them out and stare at them, crunching them one by one, the equivalent in DoggieLand terms of kids eating cereal in front of the TV? Granted, the couch IS in front of the TV, but you know what I’m saying, right?

Hmmm….

On the communication scene, great chat with Blood last night – she’s out having a blast doing “HockeyTime(r)” [whoa … looking at the word hockey, I’m pondering ‘hock’ – what is it? I know you can be in and out of hock, but how does that become a sport of middle sized white guys? Hmmm…] – they watched ‘Slap Shot‘ last night in anticipation of the upcoming [insert cool local hockey teams from north o’ Seattle here] game. HockeyTime(r) is where she and her boss-dude GoalieMitch taunt fellow co-workers into sitting in an ice arena, drinking beer, and possibly – hopefully – getting dental work!!! Wait … no … um… yes. Yes indeed! So Slap Shot it was, and I’m hoping to be able to make it to HockeyTime(r) one of these years. Go … uh… Hanson Brothers!!!!

She also had me realizing that, after 10 years … 10 YEARS in LA, it’s now that I’m in happy little DurhamTown that I’ve crossed paths with musicians she has greatly enjoyed – Kim Townsend being the exception that makes the rule – Blood was thinking of me while watching the Oscars, and was quite happy for the independent leaning the awards took. Go Cody Diablo!!! Which, of course, lead to Kimya – who is, of course, amazing. I shared with Blood her Amoeba Hollywood show (find it on YouTube), and the Indie Spirit Awards show which Kimya blogged about. Which got me to talking about Troika Music Festival and John D. ofThe Mountain Goats, who apparently just played Seattle Tuesday Night.

Wow. That’s a long sentence!

So, what I was trying to say is in just a year I’ve solidly landed in Blood’s ‘good music’ bin, and frankly I’m saddened that I didn’t put more time in the ‘local’ scene in LA. Though, I’m not sure if that scene exists… sure it does, sure it’s different than Durham’s.

Why is blue heading to the back porch at full gallope? (yes – gallope – not gallop) … apparently, no reason what so ever!

Oh, hey – here are some pics by John D.’s special lady – over at Flickr. In case, you know, you haven’t seen enough pics. Hers, however, are good.

So, let’s recap – early. Sunny. Cold, btw. Good music helps you in life. Kimya and Goats ARE good music. Good friends help you get through life too – oh, had a good chat with MickeyMatt yesterday too! Got me pondering EarthCams – web cams from every where – you ARE there, except, you know – you’re sitting in front of your computer! Blue is awesome, Boo is awesomer – and the days are flying by like a rollercoaster. Go Good Eats!

So, things that make me have hope:

  • Cool things found on the ‘net, including the bookcase/bed above
  • Cody Diablo got her respect on by getting both Independent Spirit and Oscar for Juno
  • That Kimya got hugged by Dustin!
  • That I have such good friends
  • That I have such great family
  • That I am loved
  • That our friends are getting on and making it thru – see ya guys soon!!!
  • That we had another jack toy for Blue – she loves to make them squeak, she does!
  • That Boo and I love to watch Good Eats together
  • That Good Eats is stoking my confidence in the kitchen arena
  • That my pancakes came out tasty today.

All sorts of things, all sorts of hope.

That bookcase is cool-looking. I, though, would be making a “darnit, I’ve got a case of the shingles” joke. 🙂

Mirah – The Dogs of B.A.

really?
“the players suffered “grievous, lasting injuries.””
“The suit contends the players suffered emotional distress and other injuries …”
Huh. I don’t get it. You weren’t guilty of anything; never charged. Yet, somehow through no fault of your own, you were hurt. By the words and deeds of others, against three of your buddies. Huh.
Perhaps, for some perspective, you might want to visit people who actually have suffered grievous, lasting injuries. Start here – it’s oh so close to your National Press Club circus tent – only about 5 and a half miles.

Meh … here’s the official list of Duke Lacrosse ‘injured’:
1. Edward Carrington
2. Casey J. Carroll
3. Michael P. Catalino
4. Gale Catalino (parent)

Until today, I had no idea who you people were. Trust me, your reputations are being polished to such a brightness by this action. Can’t wait to hear how much you want to ‘feel better’. Hope you got over your shame of the evening with the exotic dancers and the underage drinking – oh, wait – isn’t that a criminal act? Hmmm…

crap.
Sad, really ….

WaPo story on Maryland racing accident

What I can’t figure out is how the story should be done … tragedy, obviously, since 8 stupid people don’t deserve to die any more/less than anyone else. But, to make them sympathetic victims of circumstances, I’d try and not get … the real story? The peeps at 3 am races down their beers, and head out to stand in the middle of the road. Money is exchanged, crap goes on … because it’s the middle of the night and that’s who these people are – neither good nor bad, but they’re the people who drink and drive, do 150 on public roads, and apparently stand in the road.

So, I’d have to say it’s just me and my opinion that WaPo probably shouldn’t be running a story that attempts to paint these people as anything other than incredibly lucky to be alive, and typically foolish to be standing in the road.

Hmmmm … just doesn’t sit well with me – I grabbed the photo of Antonio, and I’ll try to create a succinct point. Some idiots are luckier than others. That just may be it.

damn- judgmental much, Wallace??

too many websites to distract myself with – though here are two new ones from today:
Bunny! and Freak Angels.

Too much distraction can be good when you want it. Horrible if you don’t need it.

The snow has come and gone, the weekend is upon us. I recall Boo will be trying out the farmer’s market tomorrow morn – yay fresh honey! or some such – lots and lots of Good Eats with Alton Brown – he even rides, how cool is that?

So, what makes us happy?
Chemical reaction? Chocolate cake? Cookies?
How would you make it so that we’re always happy?
Chemicals? Cookies?

How about good music? Eggs & Toast makes me smile. I loaded up some U2 last night to make me calm down, relax, smile.

Music … helps. Being productive certainly can lead to a sense of happiness. Getting the dishes finished for once, or wrangling all the laundry through the machines. All good. But some how fleeting.

Happy. Sad. Hmmm…

Just rang my elected representative in DC – told them I’m not supporting the Senate’s move to hand out retroactive immunity to the telco’s – aren’t we a nation of laws? Aren’t lawbreakers supposed to be punished, thus the whole cause and effect of having laws in the first place? Hmmm….
