Forward to the future!!

Way back, in the early 80s, I stumbled upon Neil Young.
Not, as some would guess, via his early days with Crazy Horse, or the Crosby show; no, it was a throw-away album called ‘Trans’ that I checked out of the Dunham Public Library – the actual album too!

Cool, isn’t it??
Well, as I sit here working up answers to the quiz at the end of Chapter 2 in my Security+ Guide to Network Security Fundamentals, sweet karmic bliss flows out of my computer speakers – Neil sings Computer Cowboy (AKA Syscrusher)!

It plays above the sounds of my little MacBook HOWLING away because there’s nothing like reading about all the cooties a computer can get to make you think “hey, when WAS the last time I ran my security essentials suite on FULL SCAN, instead of just QUICK SCAN??? How about we do that … right NOW!”

“Keep Calm and Carry On” or “Keep Calm … and Cupcakes!”

Sunday! Sunday! Sun… wait …

I spy with my own little eyes …er, not a whole lot os sun right now. it IS 9 am, and though I have a good view out the side window in the office, looking towards Henry’s collection of be-sheeted Alfas all I see is a scruffy green lawn that needs a mow, our Dali-esque leaning bench in front of the pine trees of dislike. At least the tree trunks have that blackening that happens when it rains – but past the forest of disliked trees I see gray – socked in like a gag gift at the bottom of an appliance cardboard box in the living room of 1 trinity on a chilly Christmas morn!!!

Ok – we only did that once or twice, right? I believe our family had a tradition of string (yarn?) and I’m presuming sleep-deprivation inspired elation. Or maybe I’m thinking of a Brady Bunch episode.

How the hell are you? Can you believe this summer? did you melt? How are the ‘nimals?

We’re tuffing it out here – I believe we’ll only have a week of high 90s this month – totally cooler than July was here. Wonder how it was at the beach this summer? Probably didn’t miss much.

You may have missed the news – I’ve gotten myself back in the collegiate state of mind! Oh yeah – I’ve taken note of these ‘computers’ that have appeared on the contemporary scene and now that the ‘internet’ is available on most of them I think getting some real knowledge on how they network together might prove to be a smart move. So, keep your Cat 5E cables crossed for me & go play a game of Packet Tracer as I head   into the world of Information Systems Security!! Woot W00t!!

This time it’s 50 years, not 75 years. That’s progress, right?

Had a lovely time yesterday hanging out with Morgan and Izzy and Jan and Adam and Jessie and Dahlia-bean. Always nice to hang with totally awesome peeps – especially when I get some nice feedback on how my little Facebook photo experiment is not too shabby. Woot indeed!

oh the Izzy-dorableness!

Jessie & Dahlia-bean
Tasty treats – though not Upstate half-moon, still good

<snipped rant on the crappy situation of politics, our corrupt societal morals, ponderings of challenging 501(3)c tax exempt statuses, and general mood bummering…>

Hey – listening to a string of 1983 and 1984 tunes – ‘Somebody’s Watching Me’ by Rockwell(??!!) just started playing, and if I turn my focus oh so slightly to the left here, and recall the mental joy of spinning some Marc Cogman on the living room PS3 these past few days, and the insane ease in which I can find music that I remember by typing in ‘1984 billboard’ in Grooveshark’s search box … hell, it’s even easy for me to find and listen to tunes Blood’s mentioned (‘Los Angeles’ by Phosphorescent) or Matt’s suggested ( in an email subject lined “A friend thought you would be interested in this song”, shares ‘Rock It’ by Sub Focus). Music from the mid 80s makes me feel __________!

Just enjoyed listening to the rain outside (“Here Comes the Rain Again” by the Eurythmics) as Boo and I took a moment to just be, laying about the bed with the Blue dog close by for the perfect trifecta of loving souls, snuggly souls, and nature’s soundtrack. Yay – all is good in the world!!

Ok – gonna push this so peeps can ponder “just what happened to Scott, and how do I take measures to prevent this from happening to me and my loved ones??’ – ah, the riddles of the universe!

“Keep Calm and Carry On” or “Keep Calm … and Cupcakes!”

Hey – look!!

First an apology. No – first let me express my sincerest appreciation for the wonderful people in my life. My love, my Boo – I have no idea what she thought but she kept her mouth shut. My friends both close and far – again, no one pointed out the shocking truth that is this …

er, not so great ‘image’ for scott

So, I give you this –

still not great, but no longer scary!!

as an act of apology – I just didn’t know what I was doing.
well, it’s not like I was trying to make marmalade and accidentally grew my hair out for about a year. I was growing out my hair – no real reason. Just to see what it’s like – and like an attempt to make lemonade out of marmalade rue, I just kept at it thinking it would get better. It did not. Sigh.

So, here ya go – probably should step out of the metaphorical kitchen, don’t you think??

Hope you’re doing fine, having a good hair day, if you will.

Mat Honan Suffered … so we could learn

07TuesdayAUG 2012

Gizmodo. It’s a name I trust in the world of blog-based journalism focused on technology. Gawker is the owner and they’ve done a good job building a blogging empire to be reckoned with – Jalopnik, Gizmodo, Jezebel, etc.
So when I noted a story blowing up around sir Mat over the weekend, I paid attention to it. Could have been the headlines – “Yes, I was hacked. Hard.”
I read, paid attention, read the follow-up that revealed the (what’s the word for diabolical catch-22?) TSA-like juxtaposition of information sensitive enough to hand over the keys to the Apple orchard but not so sensitive that your Amazon-ing shopping account isn’t shy about posting to the web in clear-text the exact same details. Sigh.
Last 4 of your credit card, plus billing address. Wait – as Mat pointed out, that’s your Pizza guys super secret intel too! Double pepperoni sigh.
Seems somewhat focused on the world of Apple, and at this moment I’m kinda ok – have the MacBook Air (LOVE it!!), but roll with the windows (I really AM USED to it). Is my .ME account even active? Am I at all connected to the .iCloud world? Don’t know. Ask me about my google-fication (Since ought TEN!!) and then ask me if I cringe a little.
So my Google account has 2-factor authentication turned on. It’s a pain in my ass about once a month. I click and expect the lights to magically turn on, and stumble into a digital ‘papers please’ moment, where I curse and fumble for my phone thinking “of course now – when I’m attempting to pull up some awesome YouTube vids on a friends computer – NOW you want my super secret password. Thanks. A lot!”

But I don’t worry much about my photos being wiped from my PicasaWeb galleries. Guess that’s a good thing.

Scott

Heartbeats, donuts and tones…

we’re exploring mo’ fo’s!! Mars – the planet next door.
40 odd ‘scientists’ sit at JPL, televised in the rank and file blue shirts, titled workstation, and big screens.
A performance … real life. All for the love of a hunk of metal.
Old guys seems tense; young guys have a Mohawk and bubble gum.

And here I sit at my home desk, watching two feeds on my computer flat screen, a thin and light MBA to my left, a cell phone with 4G WIMAX radio … tech makes life cool and fun!! hey – dude had an apple at NASA!

Boo rests – a weekend is great when you’re whipped from being out and about with friends! Also – donuts. that is all.

Yesterday – Saturday – went for a stroll in the morning with Morgan and Izzy … plenty of fun pics snapped on that walk, such as new art Morgan picked up at a yard sale, Bronto seemed pleased!

Of course there were a few flowers …

Then on last Thursday Boo and Morgan and Izzy with me headed to the Museum o’ Life and Science …
we took some pics…

top and bottom pics I took, middle two are Boo’s snaps – awesome aren’t they??

Did I mention I also spent most evenings this week hunting a ‘good shot’ to share over at FaceBook?

And even more snaps, cause damn it’s fun!

Boo snapped the dragonfly(s) at Duke Gardens, I snapped the others.

Too cool- from 1991 with Sir Tim thinking a linked webby thing for computers would be good, to today – watching JPL peeps ‘celebrate’ … you’d think they’d hire out to the Rap Community or something…

{Today in history (from Wikipedia) – 1991 – British computer programmer Tim Berners-Lee (pictured) first posted files describing his ideas for a system of interlinked, hypertextdocuments accessible via the Internet, to be called a “World Wide Web“.}

Then thumbnails of pics from the planet next door – the wheel of the rover. On another planet. watched on the internet. too fucking cool.

Bravo smart brains! washes that Chik-fil-H8 taste right out of my mouth.

wow … this is awesome.
